Flood In Pakistan

Most of the readers here should, by now, be very familiar with the unfortunate floods disaster that hit Pakistan late July and which has been intensifying throughout most of this month. Some of the Pakistani students here in UTP have had their homes affected by the floods. It is reported from the donation group of Pakistani Students in UTP that this catastrophe has shaken the whole country and that thousands have lost all they have. This report is echoed by Aid groups with the United Nations saying the disaster (in Pakistan) is on a bigger scale than the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. The following statistics highlight the enormity of the devastating floods.

Causalities
Over 1,600

Directly affected
Over 4 Million

Total Affected
Over 14 Million

Without Shelter, food & water
1.8 Million

Houses Destroyed(in one province only)
160,000

Reports by Mercycorps and BBC tell of the rapid rise of flood waters in southern Pakistan which resulted inloss of lives and property. The United Nations estimates that 35 percent of Sindh Province is still underwater while official Pakistani government estimates put the number of people now affected by the monsoon floods at 20 million.

Health experts warn that the threat of epidemics in flood-hit areas is growing. The flooding, which began in the mountainous north-west of Pakistan, has swept south across a quarter of the country including its agricultural heartland. The International Monetary Fund has warned that the floods could have dire long-term economic consequences for a country already reliant on foreign aid. Pictures from the early days of the floods as well those of the current situation can be seen here and here.

The Pakistani Students Community in UTP has set up the Pakistani Welfare Fund (PWF) where individuals can make donations for the victims of the floods. There are donation boxes placed at each café shop and cafeterias (v1, v2, v3, v4, v5) where you can put your donation.
